Dear family,
First of all the MTC is getting a little better. This language is finally making sense to me. My Chinese has increased so much in just the last week. The Lord is blessing me for my patience and struggles. My English has even begun to leave me. I have been speaking English with Chinese grammar. For instance, the other day in a lesson I wanted to say in my testimony to the investigator, I know God and Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph Smith after he prayed. However, what I said was, "I know God and Jesus Christ towards Joseph Smith appeared." I was speaking English but was using complete Chinese grammar. It was hilarious, everyone started laughing because of how funny it sounded but in Chinese its so natural to say it that way. You would understand the humor more if you knew a little bit about Chinese. All Chinese sentences follow a simple pattern, STPVO (subject time place verb object). It’s all making sense to me now. Oh another funny incident was when I read the word attitude aloud in class. In Chinese the word "de" is pronounced duh. So when I said attitude, I said attituDUH. (ha,ha) My English is going away and my Chinese is prevailing, I love it. Also the translations in Chinese are amazing. For example, the word for focus in Chinese is jiaodian. When you split the word apart, jiao means complete, and jian means heart, so together jiaodian means complete heart. This totally makes the meaning of focus so much stronger. This is why I love chinese so much because their words have such a deeper meaning than our English words. This is what I have been trying to do lately though. I have honestly been trying to put my complete/entire heart into the work and I can notice the blessings that come from that. I have focused all of my studying around the people I’m going to soon teach and I can truly notice the way the Lord has directed me to things I need to study and learn. The spirit is an amazing thing. The guidance and inspiration I receive on a daily basis is indescribable. Anyways, here’s some other awesome news. My branch president here was recently released... and he was called as my new Taichung mission president! It was such an amazing surprise. No one saw it coming. He was called as my mission president 4 months ago but couldn’t say anything until he was released. So for the first time he announced he was the new Taichung mission president. I was unbelievably stoked because I love this guy so much. He’s amazing and has basically done everything I want to do... he served a mission in Taiwan, went to BYU, and then went on to med school, has been a doctor in several hospitals, lived in Shanghai, etc. I don’t think its by chance he was called as my mission president. I cant wait to go out to the field to get to know him even more and to serve with him. So I got your package today with the cookies. They were so fresh and amazing... thanks! Oh and something cool was when I opened your fortune cookie you sent me in the package. This is what it said, "you will soon witness a miracle." Its crazy how fortune cookies always say what you really need to hear sometimes. We'll see what that miracle is and I'll let you know when it happens. Well I think that is everything for now. I love and miss everyone so much. Keep praying for me and I'll fill you in on some more MTC experiences next week.
Love, Rui Zhanglao
